If challenges are your thing, then you're in the right place - the cottages are close to the North Pennines which includes some of the highest road climbs in England,  Killhope Cross and nearby Harthope Moss, both reaching 627m; you can find out about them here.

Hamsterley Forest is around 7 miles from each of the cottages with extensive forest cycle trails, great for mountain bikers.

Jackdaw's Perch cottage has a cycle-friendly lockable outhouse and a yard where you can hose down and clean your bike.
